Introduction

In order to thoroughly review the present worldview and to offer an alternative in this book that can be considered true, I will develop an argument as described below.

First of all, I insist that we admit that: 1) the world or universe about which modern philosophy or physics has proposed theories is a restricted world or universe and not representative of the entire world or universe; and 2) more importantly, the world or universe that philosophy or physics has attempted to understand has been studied with the underlying assumption that that world or universe exists entirely independently of human beings.

There is little doubt that it has been extremely useful and practical to make inquiries into the world or universe based on the restrictions associated with this assumption. Human beings have certainly created this modern civilization by taking advantage of such a traditional worldview. And it is true that we rely on this worldview for our current comfortable lives, in spite of the fact that many issues must still be settled.

However, such a traditional worldview is comprised of a jumble of restricted worldviews that originated from various fields of study and, no matter how we look it, that can only be an approximation, as it arises from a viewpoint in which the world or universe is regarded as completely separate from human beings. If we wish to subscribe to a true worldview, it must be founded on the assumption that the world and universe cannot be separated from us at all.

This new worldview seems to be what we human beings originally had in ancient times. It appears to be one that all modern citizens could have if they were not forced to buy into a “hypothetical” worldview [traditional worldview] in school, as though it were the only one that they could learn or hold. Clearly, this “hypothetical” worldview that human beings have relied upon for so long will continue to remain useful. However, we must recognize that such a “hypothetical” worldview differs entirely from the truth.

A more accurate worldview is one in which every phenomenon, event, or thing is regarded as part of one totality and is inseparable from other phenomena, events, or things. Let us consider the idea presented by David Bohm, who says, “We may regard each of the ‘particles’ constituting a system as a projection of a ‘higher-dimensional’ reality, rather than as a separate particle, existing together with all the others in a common three-dimensional space.”1 He makes this statement based on the reality within our lives that “all these [human beings and nature] are projections of a single totality.”2

This idea implies that every phenomenon, event, or thing that we would normally regard as separate from others could ultimately be a projection of a “higher-dimensional” reality. It appears difficult for us to fully grasp this reality. However, I believe that it is at least possible for us to imagine the existence of such a reality.

If we attempt to make this more accurate worldview our own and to regard every phenomenon, event, or thing from this viewpoint, it is critically important for us to bring as much of our imagination to this task as possible. With this new worldview, we may come to recognize certain things in a more convincing way than we did previously. Moreover, subscribing to this alternative worldview may enable us to resolve certain issues that had remained unresolved before.
